Kathryn Bentley of Dream Collective talks about her Silver Lake store, plus scents, soundtracks & ceramics

In 2012, California-based designer Kathryn Bentley opened Dream Collective, a boutique in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, which she also uses as a studio for her namesake jewelry line. The shop stocks her own jewelry (think enchanting diamond ouroboros rings and opal amulets), as well a range of carefully selected items, including Waka Waka furniture, Bzippy ceramics, Nancy Pearce bronze sculptures, and our very own Strange Plants books. “I am rarely looking at other jewelry,” she told the New York Times in an interview. “Art is my inspiration. And how things are made—the actual hands-on part of it. That’s what is interesting for me.” In the following interview, we further question Kathryn about her interests, which include Cocteau Twins, orange blossoms and David Cressey pots.

When and why did you open Dream Collective?
I opened Dream Collective in 2012. I originally was looking for a studio space to make jewelry, when I found the space on Micheltorena. Rents were still cheap enough to rent a storefront for a workspace. I had a small storefront with most of the space dedicated to studio.

What’s the best thing about having your own shop?
Collaborating with other designers keeps me interested and excited.

What are a few of your favorite items in the store?
I love B. Zippy’s ceramics and Nancy Pearce bronze sculptures.

What one album is the best soundtrack for your store?
We’ve been playing Cocteau Twins nonstop.

What is the best part about Silver Lake?
The hills are the best part!

Where is your favorite place to eat in the neighborhood?
Most people will agree, Sqirl is the way to go. I’ve been ordering the Kabbouleh Salad, add avocado.

What do you collect or what can you never have enough of?
I have been collecting David Cressey pots for years. I could keep going forever.

What was the last book you read?
Gloria Steinem, My Life on the Road.

What is your favorite smell?
Orange blossom.

What do you do to relax?
Paint.
