British artist Gary Webb’s plastic and playful palm trees

British artist Gary Webb uses mundane materials for unusual reasons. “More because of the language or the story of the materials,” Webb told Elephant magazine. “I’m interested in what they are discussing in their own weird depth.” The result, like his reasoning, is unexpected and playful. For his 2014 exhibition, Eye Ball Story, at the Galerie Mitterrand in Paris, for example, Webb used multicolored mirrors to create two life-size palm trees, and his glossy sculptures were displayed on a bed of resin leaves. “His sculptures are characterized by their contrasting compositions,” the gallery described, “part abstract, part figurative, at once geometric and organic, combining modernist references and kitsch decorative motifs.”
